What is ActivityPub?

ActivityPub is an open, decentralized social networking protocol based on Pump.io 's ActivityPump protocol. It provides a client/server API for creating, updating, and deleting content, as well as a federated server-to-server API for delivering notifications and content.

Is ActivityPub an open social networking protocol?

ActivityPub isn’t the only attempt to create an open social networking protocol. Bluesky, another Twitter competitor that’s still in private beta, has developed the AT Protocol, which also allows for federated social networks. Its most interesting feature is that it allows users to select what algorithm they want to sort their social feeds.

What is ActivityPump protocol?

The standard was co-authored by Evan Prodromou, creator of StatusNet (now known as GNU social ). At an earlier stage, the name of the protocol was "ActivityPump", but it was felt that ActivityPub better indicated the cross-publishing purpose of the protocol.

Where are ActivityPub protocol exchanges taken?

The protocol exchanges are taken from ActivityPub.Academy, a modified Mastodon instance that shows ActivityPub messages in real time (see the announcement post ).
